The Anthony Middle School (AMS) strives to meet the academic needs of its diverse student body. Utilizing assessment tools such as NWEA (Northwest Evaluation Association) Map Program, TAKS Release Tests, STAR Test and teacher-made assessments, AMS faculty and staff determine the academic level of each individual student. After the academic ability of the student has been established, teachers and staff develop a plan of action for:
• Achieving academic excellence
• Meeting state-assessment standards
• Preparation for success in subsequent grade levels
Our regular education program consists of required courses in reading, language arts, mathematics, science, social studies, physical education and health. In addition, students with accelerated math skills have the opportunity to advance to Algebra I during their 8th grade year and receive a high school math credit. Spanish I may also be taken as an 8th grade elective for a high school foreign language credit. Depending on the grade level of the student, available electives include Technology, Robotics, Career Investigations, Physical Education (mandatory for 6th grade), and Band.
Our students identified as Gifted and Talented (GT) (and those recommended by teachers) enter a Humanities program, which is a multi-grade level, project-based program incorporating a seamless Reading, Language Arts, and Social Studies curriculum based on a year-long theme.
Special Education students receive instruction based on their Individualized Education Plan (IEP) through Inclusion in the regular classroom. Our goal is to mainstream all special needs students into the regular education classroom. The regular education teachers provide instruction along with any modifications and accommodations required by the IEP. Furthermore, the special education teacher and aides provide additional assistance to these students in the regular classroom. The purpose of Inclusion is to raise academic expectations of the special education student, improve self esteem, and when possible, move the student towards exiting the special education program.
English as a Second Language (ESL) is offered to students currently learning the English language or newly immigrated to the U.S.
AMS provides students with a newly renovated gymnasium, two science laboratories, a library, a cafeteria, and two computer labs.
