Bilingual Education
Bilingual Education
A Bilingual Education program of instruction that provides for learning basic skills in
the primary language of the students. The elementary school bilingual education
program is implemented through a Dual Language immersion/one way model. This
is a model through which students identified as English learners are served in both
English and another language (Spanish).
The goal of the one-way dual language immersion is for
students to attain full proficiency in their native language as
well as English.
ESL (English as a Second Language)
An ESL (English as a Second Language) program of instruction in which teachers
recognize and address language differences in students. The ESL approach in our
secondary schools is the ESL/pull-out model which serves students identified as
English learners through English instruction provided by an appropriately certified
ESL teacher.
The goal of the ESL pull-out is for English learners to attain full
proficiency in English to participate equitably in school.
