History

Black and white photo from the mid 1970's showing Anthony High School volleyball team and their head coach.

In the mid-1970s, Anthony High School made history with its Lady Wildcats volleyball team winning back-to-back UIL State Championships in the 1974–75 and 1975–76 seasons.

To this day, no other team from the El Paso area has claimed a UIL state volleyball title.

The team was led by head coach Mary Jane Williamson. The athletes were nicknamed the “Formidable Wildcats” in local newspapers for their dedication, skill and determination.

Traveling long distances for games and facing challenges along the way, these young women showed resilience and teamwork at every turn.

Their success on the court not only brought pride to their school and community but also set a lasting standard for excellence in Anthony athletics.
